The Red Wag Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) is a bright, active livebearer known for its vivid red body contrasted by dark black fins. It's a classic aquarium fish, but a well-colored Red Wag can still be one of the most eye-catching fish in a planted community tank.
Red Wags are hardy, social, and constantly active throughout the middle and upper portions of the aquarium. Their manageable size and peaceful nature make them an excellent choice for community setups, while their strong red coloration stands out especially well against green plants and darker backgrounds.

Red Wag Platies do well on a varied diet of quality prepared foods supplemented with plant matter and occasional frozen or live foods. Like most livebearers, they generally prefer moderately hard, mineral-rich water.
They breed readily when males and females are kept together. Plants and other cover can give females space away from persistent males while also providing protection for newly born fry.

Red Wags are a familiar fish, so rarity isn't what earns them a place in our reserves. Color and condition do. We look for healthy, well-built fish with rich red coloration, clean fins, and strong contrast between the red body and dark wag markings.
A common fish can still be an exceptional specimen.
