Bag of Water Lettuce

$4.99

Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) is a floating aquarium plant known for its soft green rosettes and long, branching root systems. Compared with smaller floaters, Water Lettuce creates a much more substantial presence at the surface while its hanging roots add structure below the waterline.

Those roots are especially useful in shrimp tanks and breeding setups, where they provide a large amount of surface area for biofilm as well as cover for shrimp, fry, and other small inhabitants.

Care Information

  • Scientific Name:Pistia stratiotes

  • Plant Type: Floating

  • Growth Rate: Moderate to Fast

  • Lighting: Moderate to High

  • CO₂: Not Required

  • Temperature: Approximately 70–82°F

  • pH: Approximately 6.0–8.0

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Placement: Water Surface

  • Propagation: Produces daughter plants by runners

Best For: Shrimp tanks, breeding tanks, planted aquariums, fry cover, and aquariums where larger floating plants are preferred.

Water Lettuce grows best with good overhead lighting and relatively calm surface water. Its leaves should remain above the water whenever possible, as constant splashing and condensation can damage them.

Under good conditions, plants reproduce readily by sending out runners with new daughter plants. Regular thinning may be necessary once a colony becomes established.

The Reserved Aquatics Standard

With floating plants, condition matters more than rarity. We focus on healthy Water Lettuce with established roots and active new growth, taken from plants maintained in our own aquarium systems.

The goal is simple: plants we'd be comfortable putting straight into one of our own displays.

Quality Worth Keeping.
